Caroline Cradock studied Music at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a BMus(Hons) in 1998. She went on to complete a PhD in early 18th century French organ mass manuscripts (2007) which involved many research trips to Paris and various parts of Belgium. As an organist, Caroline studied with Dr John Kitchen and Dr Anthony Hammond in Edinburgh, and Susan Landale in Paris.
Caroline has acted as Director of Music for a number of churches in Edinburgh, including Christ Church, Morningside from 2000 to 2005. Since 2005 she has been Assistant Organist at St John’s Episcopal Church, Edinburgh. This included a stint as Interim Director of Music from October 2018 to April 2019. She conducted the choir live on Radio 4’s Morning Service, as well as playing the organ for various television broadcasts on the BBC and STV. She has also directed the choir when doing Cathedral visits to sing the services at Hexham and Ripon and accompanied them in services at Durham Cathedral and York Minster.
Caroline worked with secular choirs over the years, including holding the position of piano accompanist to the NYCoS Midlothian area choir. In December 2018 she was appointed accompanist to the Garleton Singers in Haddington. Performing highlights in recent years have included accompanying St John’s Choir in Duruflé’s Requiem (March 2018), Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (August 2018), Fauré’s Requiem (October 2021) and the Garleton Singers in Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man (November 2018), Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana (October 2022) and Handel’s Alexander’s Feast (March 2019) where she played harpsichord continuo.
Since 2013 she has been a secondary school music teacher, teaching classroom music from S1 to Advanced Higher level. She currently works at St George’s School in Edinburgh teaching classes from P6 to U6, including exam level classes studying GCSE, Higher and Advanced Higher courses. She also teaches Grades 4-8 Theory of music, conducts and accompanies the Choirs, and directs the Concert Band.
